Since 2012, near the inception of Empower Youth Corp, the senior team has has 25 dedicated male players aged 17 and up. Over the years, they have grown together, both on and off the field, advancing through the soccer ranks with determination and teamwork. By 2018, their hard work paid off as they reached the regional league, the third highest tier in the Ugandan national soccer system. Fueled by dreams and a strong sense of community, the team aims to climb to these top tiers within the next 4 to 8 years. Each player is a valued member of the community, enthusiastically engaging in organizational activities and mentoring the younger teams, passing on their passion and skills. Whether traveling up to 100 miles (160 km) for away games or practicing on their home turf, they embody teamwork and camaraderie. The team benefits from the experienced leadership of Manager Friday Syfa, a qualified national referee, with the supportive assistance of Coach Murungi Gilbert. Together, they not only strive for excellence in competition but also foster a supportive and nurturing environment for all involved.
This team is a close-knit group of 31 boys who represent the heart of the organization's intermediate age group. They not only feed the senior team with talented players honing their skills, but also warmly welcome younger players stepping up a level on the recommendation of their coaches. The team bonds over friendly matches and small tournaments, which are joyful gatherings during holidays and special events, fostering a sense of community and sportsmanship. Guiding these young athletes are Coach Mujibu Malik and his assistant, Coach Murungi Gilbert, who nurture their development with dedication and care.
This vibrant group of 22 is the youngest team within the organization, brimming with energy, enthusiasm, and a keen eagerness to engage. Despite their youth occasionally limiting their participation, they remain deeply involved in nearly all activities of the organization. They dedicate their weekends and holidays to practice, while weekdays are reserved for their studies, as the field is primarily used by the senior team for their game preparations. Operating in the organization's lowest tier, these spirited young players work tirelessly to ascend to the next level. Their competition opportunities are currently limited to friendly matches and small tournaments, and though they have the fewest matches, their desire to play more is immense. Resources are scarce, and much of what is available is allocated to support the senior team, which competes in league play. Guiding these enthusiastic youngsters is Coach Murungi Gilbert, with assistance from Mujib Malik, a player from the senior team who brings his experience and a nurturing spirit, helping to foster both skill and joy in the game among the team members.
This vibrant women's soccer team, the sole team for women in the organization, boasts 22 players of varying ages. Established in 2018, the team quickly rose to prominence, becoming the second-best in the area by the end of the last season and marking a significant milestone as the community's first women's soccer team, to my knowledge.
Their journey has not only been about success on the field but also about changing the community's sports dynamics. Supported enthusiastically by the men's teams, with several senior players volunteering as coaches, this team has fostered a spirit of inclusivity and empowerment. Their participation has inspired many women who previously felt hesitant, encouraging them to join and become part of a transformative movement in sports. The women's team has achieved more success in a shorter period than any other team, becoming a formidable force in regional women's soccer. This extraordinary progress owes much to the dedication and guidance of head Coach Murungi Gilbert, assisted by Coach Mujib Malik and Manager Friday Syfa, whose efforts have turned what once seemed a distant dream into a glowing reality.
This team proudly holds the distinction of being the first women's team to represent the organization. Although the region has only a few female squads, resulting in the absence of a formal league for them to compete in, the team thrives on the opportunities presented by friendly matches and tournaments organized around special occasions and events. Comprising 15 dedicated members, the team embraces an open age policy, welcoming players from various walks of life and experience levels.
The inclusive nature of the team allows for a rich diversity of skills and perspectives, contributing to a dynamic and supportive environment.
This is the most diverse team of the organisation, it includes members from all teams who participate in the famous Christmas run held on 23rd of December which has been going on since 2012. The run has attracted entire community ranging from 7 years to 55 years who are not part of the organisation. This has strengthened relationship of the organisation and the entire community. On top of that, the running team has a few members who go to compete at the national level and represent the organisation. A charity run has become popular in a sense that the number of participants has increased from 20 members in 2012 to over 100 in 2019. Prizes are awarded to different categories and proceedings from the run go back to the community. The proceeds are usually distributed to the most needy members of the community.
The above team is headed by the manager, coaches and other organisational volunteers who work with members of the entire teams. This program started in 2018 as a way of giving back to the community through services mainly cleaning streets, markets, rivers, trenches and trading centers. The community members provide amazing support the teams during their home and away games. Trough community service, it is a gesture of thank from the organisation members to the community.
