Empower Youth Corp. (EYC) is a transformative initiative that uses the power of sports to uplift underprivileged youth in Uganda and New York City. Founded by Julius Mutekanga, a Ugandan Olympian and middle-distance runner, EYC offers more than just athletic training—it creates life-changing opportunities that shape futures and inspire entire communities.
Julius’s story is the heartbeat of EYC. Raised in Fort Portal, Uganda, as one of fourteen siblings, he grew up in a world where opportunity was scarce and resources even scarcer. With no money for equipment, he embraced running—the one sport that didn’t cost a thing. What started as a childhood pursuit soon became a pathway to the world stage. Julius represented Uganda at the World University Games in Thailand in 2007, then earned a scholarship to Long Island University in Brooklyn, where he graduated with a degree in Social Work in 2010. Rather than pursue graduate studies, he dedicated himself to Olympic training—qualifying for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
But for Julius, the Olympics were not the finish line—they were just the beginning.
Motivated by his own journey, he founded Empower Youth Corp. to provide young people with the same opportunities that transformed his life. His vision is rooted in the belief that sports can do more than build athletes—it can build character, community, and a sense of purpose.
EYC works with youth ages 6 to 25, offering structured weekly training in New York City and team-based programs in Fort Portal, Uganda, including soccer, volleyball, and running for both boys and girls. From one-on-one coaching and mentorship to sports gear and sponsorships, we ensure each young athlete receives the tools they need to succeed—not just in competition, but in life.
And the results speak for themselves.
Since launching, numerous boys have earned scholarships to play high school soccer, compete in track & field in college and continue higher education—all extraordinary steps toward brighter futures. In Uganda, there has been a notable increase in girls’ participation in both soccer and running, a milestone that reflects EYC’s commitment to gender inclusion and empowerment. Local events now draw families and entire communities, offering athletes a platform to showcase their talents and build self-confidence in front of those who matter most.
At its core, EYC is about more than athletics. We foster discipline, unity, mental well-being, and academic achievement through an ongoing mentorship program. We partner with schools to offer tailored support, helping youth overcome personal barriers and realize their full potential. By engaging idle and underserved youth, we open the door to self-improvement and inspire them to invest not just in their own growth, but in the future of their communities.
Empower Youth Corp. isn’t just about playing the game—it’s about changing the game. Under Julius Mutekanga’s leadership, we’re helping young people run toward their dreams, one stride at a time.
There are many ways to get involved with EYC, from making a donation to volunteering your time. Every little bit helps us make a difference!
