Empower Youth Corp: Empowering underprivileged youth in Uganda through team sports and education
Currently, we have 25 males – and we are eager to welcome more members. We started in 2012, so these boys have been with us from the initial stages of the organization, and are now in our senior, upper league.
In 2018 they made it to the regionals, and have played for two years in regional tournaments. The regional league is the third-largest tier in national soccer (after Big and Super league). All of the players come from the local community. Members participate in other organizational activities and coach younger teams. The team is coached by Friday Syfa who is a qualified National Re-free, and he is assisted by Coach Murungi Gilbert.
We are a 31-member team. Members go on to join the senior league once they have aged out of this category. There are no special leagues for this team. Most of the games they play are usually friendly matches and small tournaments organized on holidays and other special occasions. This team is Coached by Mujibu Malik and assisted by Coach Murungi Gilbert.
We are a 22-member team. This is our youngest team. Members have a lot of energy, vigor and
excitement. They get involved in almost all other activities of the organization. They practice mainly on the weekends and holidays. During the weekdays, they attend school. Members are eager to move to the next level, and do more. They rely on friendly matches and small tournaments to build skill. We aim
to provide additional opportunities for our youngest members. The team is coached Murungi Gilbert,
who is assisted by Mujib Malik who plays on our senior team.
We are a 22-member team. It is an open age category, and we are so proud of them. The team started in 2018, and it has had tremendous success. We are the second-best team in the area (we are also the first organized women’s soccer team in the community). Our women’s team is supported by our boys’ teams, and a few senior players volunteer to coach them. The women’s team has changed the dynamics of sports in the community, and Julius continues to zealously support all that they have accomplished. The women’s soccer team has registered the most success in a short period of time compared to other teams. We are now competitive in regional women’s soccer. The head Coach is Murungi Gilbert, assisted by Coach Mujib Malik and Friday Syfa.
We are a 15-member team (this is an open age category). The net ball team is the first women’s team created under the organization. They rely on friendly matches and tournaments of special occasions.
We are a 12-member team. The team is well-established locally. Competitions and tournaments are well attended by locals. Volleyball is enjoyed by many local youth, especially in the evenings. This team has particular significance for the area: volley ball is considered a bonding and community event (with many locals preferring to watch, cheer, and encourage youth participants while they engage socially with friends and neighbors).
This is our most diverse team: we have members from multiple teams who also participate in our running team. Our Christmas run, held on the 23rd of December each year since 2012, is a local favorite – which has attracted community members from 7 to 55 years to participate. Running has strengthened our relationship with the entire community. The running team also has a few members who compete at the national level, and who represent our organization in doing so. Our charity run is also very popular. In 2012, we had 20 people participate in the charity run, and in 2019 we 100 participants. Prizes are awarded to different categories, and proceeds go to the community. (Proceeds are distributed to the neediest members within the community.)
Our community service initiative is led by our coaches and volunteers. We began this initiative in 2018.
We mainly clean streets, markets, rivers, trenches and trading centers. The community members
support the teams during their home and away games, and this is how we in turn say thank you for the
amazing support.
The We Care team is responsible for the basic welfare of the team members. During tough times and
difficult situations our members rely on additional support from our coaches, mentors, and managers.
We’ve assisted members in times of grief, sickness, and personal hardship. Our intervention and care
have allowed members to remain in school, maintain a steady supply of food at home, and get through
tumultuous adolescent and teen year issues. Support for one another is a core value of the organization,
and members are encouraged to demonstrate compassion and care for one another.
